Thus, coverage is so far limitied to 48 of California's 58 counties. Some of these 48 counties have only been partially mapped as the NRCS has limited its efforts to areas which are agriculturally important. The soil surveys rarely extend into National Forests. Beginning in 2002, SSURGO digital soil information was incorporated into the Los Angeles County Important Farmland data. Prior to the availability of SSURGO, soil information was hand-transferred from the paper soil surveys. The land use minimum mapping unit of ten acres has not changed, but digital soil units of down to one acre occur in the SSURGO-enhanced Important Farmland data. Older versions of the data have not been modified.
